Our Mission

Family Advancement Ministries (FAM) Is a Catholic, diocesan, social service organization that, in partnership with the community at-large, nurtures a reverence for life by responding to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of families with the goal of moving families toward independence and self-sufficiency.

Our Vision

Believing in the compassion of God, we affirm the sacredness of human life by guiding families in need to be hope-filled, empowered and self-sufficient.

Personal Finance

The Personal Finance program consists of a two part course on taking control of your finances. In a small group setting, students discuss budgeting, ways to spend less, and avoiding money traps, credit and banking topics and organizing finances. This class meets twice a week in 2-hr sessions.

 

  • Personal Finance Basics Part 1- Money is a limited resource, so it is important to make the best financial decisions for you.  Small group discussion focuses on budgeting and becoming more conscious of spending choices.
  • Personal Finance Basics Part 2-  small group discussion continues with avoiding money traps, tapping in to potential money sources and the pros and cons of banking
  • Setting Financial Goals Part 1 - looks into how past experiences have affected current financial decision making, outline money priorities as well as some goal setting strategies
  • Setting Financial Goals Part 2 - students will make a list of both short and long term financial goals, discussion focuses on ways to improve the success rate of achieving those goals.  Budgeting tools are provided.
  • Safe Home / Save Energy - discusses how you can keep your child safe from falls, drowning, burns and poisons.  Home safety is linked to energy usage often - class also focuses on maintaining a safe home while lowering energy costs
  • Your Credit - takes a look at what is on credit report, what makes up the credit score, steps to take to improve credit, printout of free credit report.
  • Teaching Children about Money - based on the Kid's Money Smart program - helps parents to help their children learn about money basics and make choices about spending, saving and giving money away.
