Our Mission
Family Advancement Ministries (FAM) Is a Catholic, diocesan, social service organization that, in partnership with the community at-large, nurtures a reverence for life by responding to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of families with the goal of moving families toward independence and self-sufficiency.
Our Vision
Believing in the compassion of God, we affirm the sacredness of human life by guiding families in need to be hope-filled, empowered and self-sufficient.
Parenting
This is a trademark program consisting of individual classes with emphasis on promoting the philosophy of nurturing for the primary prevention of child abuse and neglect. It also focuses on the importance of raising children in a warm, trusting and disciplined home. Classes are approximately two hours in length. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of each class. Some topics include:
- Nurturing Parenting Principles- describes the seven principles of nurturing parenting and focuses on helping parents realize their ability to impact a child’s emotional development by defining ways parents can become nurturing parents.
- Building Self-Worth & Self-Esteem- helps parents realize their ability to impact a child’s overall feeling of worth and ways parents can improve their children’s self-concept, self-esteem and self-worth.
- Understanding Feelings- helps parents learn to recognize feelings in children and teaches parents how to help children manage their feelings.
- Stress Management for Parents- defines the meaning of stress, identifies way adults create stress and helps parents learn ways to reduce stress for themselves and their children.
- Dental Health - a dental hygienist shares the importance of dental care especially in pregnancy
- COMING SOON: Alternatives to Spanking- describes why parents spank, how spanking can be detrimental to children, reasons why some parents have a hard time letting go of spanking and identify alternatives to spanking
- COMING SOON: Communicating with Respect- helps parents learn to model appropriate communication styles so thoughts and feelings can be communicated to children in a manner that does not purposefully hurt them or encourage them to think less of themselves.
